Coventry High School 2010
Summer Reading Program
All Coventry High School students are required to read two books of his or her choice from the Outstanding Books for the College Bound or the Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Readers lists. One book should be fiction and one book should be non-fiction.
Creating a list of books for summer reading is difficult for those of us who love to read. There are so many books, where does the list end? How will we be able to include books that match the interests of all CHS students? Perhaps the sensible thing is to suggest that you visit the public library or a bookstore, browse the books, and choose something that interests you. However, for those who like lists and suggestions, hop on the Internet and go to the young adult section of the American Library Association webpage or peruse the attached recommendations by staff members:
www.ala.org/yalsa/booklists
Here you will find book lists for every taste including:
• Outstanding Books for the College Bound
• Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers
• Great Graphic Novels
• And more…
Many of these books may be found at the Booth and Dimmock Library or in local bookstores such as Borders or Barnes and Noble. They may also be ordered online at Amazon.com. It is always wise to check out, purchase, or order your books as early as possible. Choose a book with family or friends and discuss your reading experiences.
Reading Assignment Requirements and Suggestions for All CHS Students:
It is highly recommended to take notes and keep a journal of your impressions. Develop your own interpretation of the book and judge it as a piece of literature. At the beginning of the school year, your English teachers will instruct you on the skill of writing an annotated bibliography and we will begin to build a collection of student reviews that can be shared to help others find a great book.
