Since many of you are complaining about our in-depth study of the classics, I am assigning a mini exploration of what is out there in the world of young adult literature.
Part One: Due May 21, 2010
First, you have to visit at least two young adult literature websites from the links I provided (see list below this label). Please feel free to another site not posted but be sure to give me the URL. Include these links in your posting.
Second, you have to read at least 4 book summaries and author biographies. Once you read the summaries and bios you must rate the book 1 to 5 stars for INTEREST LEVEL only. 5 stars would be a "MUST" read and 1 star would be a "no, never, but thank you" read.
Third, once you have rated the 4 books based on your interest level, you will post your findings- include title, author, publication date and publisher with your personal interest level- in the designated blog space. You will respond to at least 3 other student blogs discussing your interests or lack thereof for the titles you selected. These assignments are due Friday, May 21st for a total of 100 points! Post your findings here- http://ckendallreadingblogcafe.blogspot.com/search/label/Interest%20Title%20Rating You will have to find a copy of your book and START reading. You should finish reading by May 31st. See my sample.
Part Two: Due June 11, 2010
The second part of this project is two-fold. You will have one week to read your top pick book (even if your top pick is a 3-finish reading by May 31st) and 2 weeks to create a book trailer based on your understanding of the characters, events, and more importantly the universal themes of your selection. Follow the link for book trailer instructions: http://ckendallreadingblogcafe.blogspot.com/search/label/Kendall%27s%20YAL%20Challenge%20Book%20Trailer%20Intructions
You will conclude this project with a 2-3 page reflection justifying the worthiness of the book according to your experience and then compare and contrast your selected contemporary book with a classic novel we read in class. I recommend you include the differences or similarities in writing style and themes in your 2-3 page reflection. Be sure to address how the time periods also affect the characters and plot. You must post submit a hard copy of your final essay and post your reflection on the appropriate blog space, http://ckendallreadingblogcafe.blogspot.com/search/label/Final%20Reflection. Your book trailers will need to be saved on the class thumb/flash drive that I will provide.

Four and a half stars. "It's about two nights that weren't going to be different from the rest, but then took a turn. It's about trying to find out who you are and who your real friends are. It's about everything being the same, the same, the same. It's about nothing being the same again." This quote was included in the synopsis and I felt that everyone could at least somewhat relate to it; as soon as I read that I knew I wanted to read it. Also, the point of view is different from anything I've ever read before-- a boy on an acid trip narrates it.

Four stars. I've wanted to read this book since Mrs. Kendall showed our class. It also reminds me of the Village, a movie, that I was terrified of when I first watched.. But the book just seems interesting.

Three stars. I read another book by this author, Firefly Lane, and it was wonderful and sad, this one sort is reminiscent of it, which is why I only gave it three stars.
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

This is a sequel to the book The Hunger Games which I read two months ago and loved it. It's about a future United States that makes 13 teens between the ages of 12 and 18 fight to the death in gladiator fights for public enjoyment once a year. The second book seems to have even more action than the first and I am very interested in continuing to read the story.
***I really suggest that for anyone who loves action novels to read The Hunger Games...Boys will like it too! I give it 5 stars because I loved the first book of the series and want to continue reading.
Looking for Alaska by John Green

In reponse to Nicoles choice of "Looking For Alaska" Catcher in the Rye is one of my favorites as well and your comparison made me very interested in that selection.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Brielle, after reading your book choices It made me laugh a little to see how opposite we are in out book chices and how our class has such a diverse collection of readers.

Behind Rebel Lines

Published in 1988 by Harcourt, Inc.
This novel is about Emma Edmonds a girl who desperately want to aid in the civil war, but not as a nurse as a spy. She must conceal her identity from the other soldiers, while battling with the difficulties of war. This book gets five stars because I love historical novels, as well I always love a story where a woman doesn't let a man tell her what to do.
Girl Overboard
By: Justina Chen Headley
Published in 2008 by Little Brown and Company
This novel is about a girl who discovers her boyfriend is after her for her father's money and ends up with a broken heart as well as an injury from a snowboarding accident. Not only must she deal with a broken heart but her step family hates her. I give this book a rating of four stars, a must read because it seems interesting, inspiring and enjoyable.
If I Should Die Before I Wake
By: Han Nolan
Published in 1994 by Harcourt Inc.
This novel is about Hilary who wakes up in a "jewish hospital" thinking she is Chana and remembers a life that she never had in Poland during the Holocaust. The book describes the struggle in which her and her family must face through out the Holocaust. This book gets three stars, it's still a historical novel, but I've read so many Holocaust novels it's noting new and fresh to me.
North of Beautiful
By: Justina Chen Headley
Published in 2009 by Little Brown and Company
This novel is about Terra a young girl who has a large birth mark on her face, which makes everyone turn their heads, she thinks she knows "what path" she wants for her life but everything turns upside down she runs into a Goth boy Jacob. All of her assumptions and views "turn upside down." This book gets a rating of three stars because I like to read stories of inspiration and self discovery, but I think the historical civil war novel seems more suspenseful and more of what I'm in the "mood" for.
In response to Nicole Logan I think that the book you chose The Perks of Being a Wallflower seems interesting and extremely relatable with dealing with drama in school.
ReplyDeleteTo Nicole Cote the novel Thirteen Reasons Why seems like something I would read and probably will be after this project is done! I love a book that plays with my emotions and books and that may not have a "fairy tale" ending.
In response to David I think I want to read the Orange House, I love a historical novel that shows a conflict that people must struggle and defeat through.

Seems like it could be interesting and have a good message, but at the same time I feel like it would get too sappy to really suit my taste.
In response to Nicole Cote, “Catching Fire” (along with “The Hunger Games”) sounds like a cool book/series. I enjoy reading those kinds of sci-fi action novels, and I will have to look into the series.
ReplyDeleteTo Kelly Black, I like the sound of your first book choice, “Behind Rebel Lines”. Stories with historical context are always interesting for me to read.
And to David, “Purple Heart” was another book I looked into and thought that it seemed interesting and may have to pick it up some time. I also agree with you that Nicole’s “Looking for Alaska” selection would be something that I would enjoy reading as well.
I found this really awesome web site for teen books: http://www.readingrants.org
ReplyDeleteAlmost Perfect by Brian Katcher ***
The general idea of this book is that a boy finds out that the girl he really likes used to be a boy! This book seems like it would be really interesting to see how people act in this situation.
Evolution Me & other Freaks of Nature by Robin Brande ****
I like the idea of this book. It deals with religion and faith. The main character is torn between he faith in God but also her belief in evolution. All her friends from church are angry at her for not protesting against evolution being taught in school. I feel like this would be a really good book.
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver ***
The main character in this book is a popular girl who is not very nice to people. She gets in a car accident and when she wakes up she is forced to re-live Feburary 12th. I'm really curious as to what she will do with this second chance.
Repossessed by AM Jenkins ***
I feel like this book would be pretty funny. It's about a demon who possess the body of a boy that was supposed to die. The demon lives the boys life and doesn't take anything for granted (carpe diem). I thought this was an interesting premise for a story.
Call me lazy but I'm going to link every novel to wikipedia to save me the hassle of going to random sites just to seem like I did more work than I have to. I mean they have every piece of information that you need you just have to click around if your that interested.

The Things They Carried by Tim O' Brien ****

This novel is a collection of related stories about a platoon in Vietnam. Although this is a fictitious novel, some experiences are influenced by O'Brien's own involvement in the war.
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote **
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Cold_Blood
The book details the brutal 1959 murders of Herbert Clutter, a wealthy farmer from Holcomb, Kansas; and his wife and two of their children. Capote's experiences in writing the story, and his subsequent fascination with the murders, have been adapted into two films, one of them being the 2005 film Capote.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams ***

I hate to say it but who doesn't know about this book. But at the same time, this book is very very confusing and is way too complex to write a summary about. If you must know then go to wiki or some other site and look it up yourself.
Call me lazy (again) but I'm just gonna go ahead and respond to the first three people.
ReplyDeleteNicole Logan
Six Rules of Maybe doesn't seem like a great book. The plot does not appeal to me at all. Your welcome. Even though this intended sarcasm won't matter because only people writing after me will read this/Mrs. Kendall.
Brielle Zeligzon
The Forest of Hands and Teeth seems kind of interesting and probably wouldn't mind it too much if I have to consider that fact I'm only reading it for school.
Nicole Cote
The Forest of Hands and Teeth seems kind of interesting and probably wouldn't mind it too much if I have to consider that fact I'm only reading it for school.
Yeah that just happened, but I'm tired give me a break. Or don't, its your call really.
David- I really enjoy war-related novels also and it seems like that genre would be good for you to read for this project. I know there are some novels written by the author Walter Dean Myers that relate to Vietnam that you might be interested in too.
ReplyDeleteJosie- I have heard of the novel Repossessed..It seems so interesting because it possibly deals with good and evil..I love supernatural stories so I will probably eventually read Repossessed.
Sean- I really suggest the Hunger Games..it is an awesome novel and it seems you enjoy the sci-fi, futuristic genre.
Kelly - I think that the novel Behind Rebel lines is the best choice for u since you enjoy reading about women being independent and strong.
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest *****

The Miles between ***
Mary E. Pearson
2009
This book seems very appealing to the young adult group as it deals with teenagers who seem very daring and take off with out anyone knowing. Sounds like something many teens would do these days.
http://www.marypearson.com/Bookshelf/TheMilesBetween.html
Zach, the book called Snow seems very interesting as I could see technology taking over even more of the human population one day, more then it already has. This book almost seems realistic and also very interesting as I'm guessing it would give insight to the possible effects of technology in the future.
ReplyDeleteJosie, Almost Perfect sounds like a great read especially in today's society. I know that if I were ever in a situation as that I would not know how to react at all! Although I support people who choose this life style, I could never see myself dating someone who has had a sex change. This seems like a great book to read especially as it may help for some to understand what it is like to be in that position for both the person finding out the secret and the person telling the secret.
Kelly, The book Girl Overboard sounds pretty interesting and seems like a book that I would read. To deal with a broken heart for one is hard enough but on top of that a broken leg. Now i personally have never broken anything (knock on wood) but to deal with both of those things at the same time definitely does sound inspiring in the aspect of finding a way to be strong emotionally and physically to make it out alright.
"Snow Crash" by published in 1992 Bantam Spectra Books
ReplyDelete*****- 5 stars ok well i love reading fiction especially fantasy/sci fi because i deal enough with the real world during the day as it is. This author is highly regaled in sci fi writings and i have heard nothing but good thing about this book. It is usually high in the best sci fi books of all times list and the fact that this book has been written fairly recently so im excited to hopefully crack it open.
http://home.austarnet.com.au/petersykes/topscifi/books_cyberpunk.html#7
"The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams 1979 Del Rey books
****- 4 stars If didnt want to read Snowcrash so bad i would definately read this. This is usually even higher rated on sci fi lists than snow crash and the fact that it was written in the late 70s makes it have potential to be absolutely mind blowing. But the fact that I have heard from others that snow crash may be better than Enders Game which is considered the best sci fi, makes me quite interested that book instead.
http://www.teenreads.com/features/ultimate-reading-list.asp#h
"The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien Broadway books (December 29, 1998)
**-2 stars Though i do reading a good war story, I never feel like the expression of actual war is actually portrayed. Some fault of this is me because i have never experienced war, but still ive never been a fan of the Vietnam war. But the recommendation from zach's brother whose in college and is as almost as awesome as zach makes it seem somewhat worth picking up.
http://www.teenreads.com/features/ultimate-reading-list.asp#h
"In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote
Vintage; First Edition edition (February 1, 1994)
***- 3 stars My favorite type of book to read it mystery. And by the reviews, the suspense is good so i probably will pick it up, but im more in the sci fi mood.
http://www.teenreads.com/features/ultimate-reading-list.asp#h
RESPONSES:
ReplyDeleteDavid about Purple Heart: Though i do like war books as well and this book looks to have some mystery, i dont i think i would enjoy it. I hate the Iraq war cause there is no glory like in the battles of WW2, its more survival in my opinion due to cowardly terrorist tactics. i love our troops, but id much rather read about ww2 or the pacific theater.
Steph about The girl who kicked over the hornets nest: I would have to agree that this book looks very well written. Vendetta is always interesting and combined with the unknown and intrigue of mystery can only help it!
Nicole C. about searching for alaska: ok,so i didnt enjoy catcher in the rye very much, but it was no Ethan Frome(awful book) and alaska is pretty boring so that combination probably wouldnt intrigue me.
Columbine ****
ReplyDeleteBy Dave Cullen
This book is about the tragedy that happened at the school Columbine when two teenagers went on a killing spree. It explains the truth and the reasons behind what happens and disproves some common misconceptions about what actually went on. It seems like it could be really interesting, because I've heard a lot about Columbine before but I don't really know much about what really happened and I think it would offer a really unique perspective.
The Bell Jar ***
By Sylvia Plath
This is an autobiography by a woman who has a mental breakdown. I've wanted to read this for a while mostly because I find psychology really interesting; I love stories about insanity. I also like how it's largely nonfictional...I think that would make it carry more weight for me if I read it.
Anne Frank ***
Most people read this back in middle school but I never did, and since I've never learned that much about the Holocaust or World War II in school it seems like it would be a good opportunity. It also just seems like one of those books everyone should read at some point...it gets referenced all the time and I've heard it's very good.
Pages For You ****
By Sylvia Brownrigg
This is a story of two women who fall in love. It's written in a series of very short chapters, each one representing a day, and each only a couple pages long. I think it would be enjoyable to read because I haven't read a lot of GLBT literature before and I think the format would make it the kind of book I wouldn't want to put down.
Brielle, I think the book you chose called Pure Sunshine sounds really interesting and I wouldn't mind reading it after you if you decide on reading that one : ) I agree that it has a different point of view than you normally find.
ReplyDeleteNicole (Cote), I love John Green's books and Looking for Alaska was fantastic, it was one of the best books I've ever read. I highly recommend it. Same thing with 13 Reasons Why, that book really had an impact on me and I think it still does today.
Josie, I agree that Almost Perfect would be really interesting to read...sex changes and the transgender community are still pretty taboo topics and it's cool to see a book that addresses them.

The book seems kind of cheesy, but the summary made it sound sort of amusing. It’s about two best friends who go on a road trip; it's also about reinventing yourself, but with a more complicated plot.
In response to Zach, I think Snow Crash also sounds pretty interesting. I tend to be drawn to stories related to viruses and such.
Brielle, The Forest of Hands and Teeth also reminded me of The Village! I like the eeriness of it.
Nicole C, Looking for Alaska also seems interesting, because it can relate to many teenagers and the novel would probably be a good read.

Kate McGowan, It's Kind of A funny story sounds oddly amusing. I like books that can make me laugh but also make me sad. Seems like a good choice!
ReplyDeleteChristine, in response to your pick, Columbine. I have read this book and definitly recommend it. Although disturbing it's very intersting to read.
